Your Business Won’t Change by Accident: The Planning Day That Could Change Your Next 12 Months

When was the last time you stepped away from running your business long enough to intentionally design what comes next?

As business owners and leaders, we spend so much time responding to what needs our attention today that it can be difficult to make time for what will matter most tomorrow.

We manage people, solve problems, serve clients, respond to opportunities, and navigate the unexpected. Our calendars fill up. Our to-do lists grow. And before we know it, another month—or another year—has passed.

But here’s a question worth asking yourself:

Are you intentionally building the business you want, or are you simply keeping up with the business you have?

Last week, I explored the power of intentional planning and the difference it can make when we stop operating on autopilot and start making deliberate decisions about where we’re going.

Intentional planning isn’t about predicting every twist and turn. It’s about getting clear on what matters, deciding where to focus, and creating a practical plan to turn your intentions into meaningful progress.

And if you’ve been thinking about making time for that kind of planning, I have an invitation for you.

Being busy isn’t the same as making progress

One of the biggest challenges for business owners and leaders is the temptation to do more.

More projects. More priorities. More meetings. More initiatives. More goals.

We often assume that if we’re working harder, staying busy, and accomplishing a long list of tasks, we’re moving the business forward.

But activity and achievement aren’t the same thing.

You can spend an entire week responding to urgent demands without making meaningful progress on your most important business objectives. You can set ambitious annual goals without establishing the daily and weekly habits needed to achieve them. And you can have a talented, hardworking team that is busy all day but not necessarily aligned around the outcomes that matter most.

Intentional planning challenges us to pause and ask a different question:

What are the few things that would make the biggest difference if we gave them our focused attention?

That question can change how you allocate your time, engage your team, invest your resources, and measure success.

You don’t need more goals. You need the right goals.

I believe one of the most valuable things a leader or business owner can do is narrow their focus.

When everything is a priority, nothing truly is.

Trying to advance too many important objectives simultaneously can dilute your attention, stretch your resources, and leave you wondering why you’re working so hard without seeing the results you expected.

This is where I encourage leaders to consider the concept of Wildly Important Goals (WIGs).

Instead of creating an exhaustive list of everything you’d like to accomplish, identify one to three goals that would have the greatest impact on your business.

Then ask yourself:

  • What specific result am I trying to achieve?
  • What actions will most directly influence that result?
  • What needs to happen consistently—not just occasionally—to move us forward?
  • How will I measure progress?
  • What distractions or competing priorities do I need to say no to?
  • How will I hold myself and my team accountable?

These questions connect strategic thinking with execution.

Through the principles of the 4 Disciplines of Execution (4DX), leaders can move beyond simply setting goals to identifying lead measures, tracking progress with a meaningful scorecard, and establishing the accountability needed to sustain momentum.

The objective isn’t to create a more complicated plan. It’s to create a more focused one.

A goal gives you a destination. Intentional planning helps you decide how you’ll get there. Consistent execution helps you make progress.

Give yourself permission to step away and think

Here’s the challenge: it’s difficult to work on your business when you’re constantly working in your business.

When you’re immersed in daily operations, it’s easy to lose sight of the bigger picture. You may recognize that something isn’t working, but lack the time to explore why. You may see exciting opportunities but struggle to determine which ones deserve your attention. You may know you need a plan but keep postponing it until things slow down.

How often do things actually slow down on their own?

Sometimes, the most productive thing you can do is stop doing long enough to think differently.

Create space to challenge your assumptions, look at your business objectively, and make deliberate decisions about the future you want to create.

Consider these questions:

  • Vision: What do I want my business to look like 12 months from now?
  • Reality: Where am I today, and what is helping or hindering my progress?
  • Focus: Which one to three priorities would make the biggest difference?
  • Execution: What needs to happen in the next 90 days to move those priorities forward?
  • Measurement: What lead measures will tell me whether I’m doing the right things?
  • Accountability: How will I track progress and ensure my plan doesn’t get lost in the day-to-day demands?

These aren’t questions to squeeze into the last five minutes of a meeting. They deserve thoughtful consideration, honest reflection, and a willingness to challenge the way you’ve always done things.

And sometimes, having an experienced thinking partner in the room can help you see what you can’t see when you’re too close to the problem.

Your next chapter deserves more than a to-do list

This is why I offer VIP Business Planning Days.

These focused, 4–6-hour working sessions are designed for business owners and leaders who are ready to step back from the daily demands of running their business and intentionally plan what comes next.

This isn’t about handing you a generic template and sending you on your way. It’s about creating dedicated time to think strategically, ask better questions, work through challenges, and make decisions that move your business forward.

Together, we’ll explore what you’re working toward, identify the priorities that deserve your attention, and translate your goals into practical next steps.

Depending on your needs, our session may include:

  • Clarifying your direction: Reconnecting with your vision and defining what success should look like over the next 12 months.
  • Identifying your priorities: Narrowing your focus to the one to three goals that could make the greatest difference.
  • Challenging assumptions: Examining what’s holding you back, where opportunities exist, and what might need to change.
  • Building your execution plan: Mapping the actions and milestones that will move your priorities forward over the next 90 days.
  • Establishing meaningful measures: Identifying lead measures and ways to track progress rather than relying solely on end results.
  • Creating accountability: Determining how you’ll stay focused, follow through, and adapt as circumstances change.

My approach combines strategic thinking, coaching, organizational effectiveness, and practical execution tools. The session is customized to your business, your goals, and the decisions you need to make.

You’ll have space to think, a partner to challenge and support your thinking, and a plan to help turn your intentions into action.

The goal isn’t to leave with more work. It’s to leave with greater clarity, fewer competing priorities, and a practical path forward.

What could change if you made intentional planning a priority?

Imagine approaching the next 12 months with a clearer sense of direction.

Imagine knowing which priorities deserve your attention—and having the confidence to put other things aside.

Imagine your team understanding what matters most, how success will be measured, and which actions will help achieve it.

And imagine replacing the feeling that you’re constantly trying to catch up with the confidence that you’re deliberately moving toward something meaningful.

That’s the opportunity intentional planning creates.

It doesn’t eliminate uncertainty, guarantee results, or mean everything will go according to plan. Business will always bring unexpected challenges and opportunities.

But having a plan gives you a foundation for making decisions, evaluating opportunities, and adjusting course without losing sight of what matters most.

You can be responsive without being reactive. Ambitious without pursuing everything at once. And productive without allowing busyness to become the measure of success.

I’m opening three VIP Business Planning Day spots

Over the next month, I’m opening three spots for VIP Business Planning Days for business owners and leaders who are ready to invest focused time in their next chapter.

If you’ve been reading my posts, thinking about your business goals, or telling yourself that you really should make time to plan, this may be the opportunity you’ve been waiting for.

You don’t need to wait until January to get intentional about the year ahead. You don’t need to have all the answers before you begin. And you don’t need to wait until you’re overwhelmed or something isn’t working to give your business the attention it deserves.

You simply need to be willing to pause, think strategically, make decisions, and commit to action.

Don’t just take my word for it

What does it feel like to step away from the day-to-day demands of your business and invest in intentional planning?

Vanessa Bowen, CPA, NLP, participated in a VIP Business Planning & Coaching Day and shared how the experience helped her reconnect with her business. After our session, she felt more connected to her business than she had in the previous year and a half.

Through focused planning, identifying lead measures, and creating a scorecard, she gained greater clarity on where to focus her attention and how to move forward.

Watch Vanessa share her experience.

Sometimes, the most valuable outcome isn’t simply a plan on paper. It’s the clarity, perspective, and renewed sense of direction that come from making the time to think intentionally about what matters most.Three spots. Four to six focused hours. A dedicated opportunity to step back, challenge your thinking, and create a plan for what comes next.

Your business will demand your attention either way. The question is whether you’ll intentionally direct that attention toward what matters most.

If you’re ready to explore whether a VIP Business Planning Day is the right fit for you, I’d love to start a conversation.
